Dominion: Severe Utility Damage Hurt Derecho Efforts

Representative from power company gives insight into response to June 29 storm

Dominion Virginia Power blamed a lack of advance preparation time for their week-long power restoration following the June 29 derecho storm, the company said in a presentation Thursday during a Town Hall meeting hosted by Del. Kaye Kory's (D-38th) in Falls Church. “It is very scary to be without any kind of communication or air conditioning when we experience a million-year storm," said Kory, who called the meeting so residents had a chance to communicate directly with the service providers. Dominion's problems stemmed largely from the storm's sudden arrival, the company said. Update: Monday’s Power Restoration Outlook

More than 150,000 remained without power early Monday morning, according to Dominion Virginia Power.

Update - 10:45 a.m.: Dominion Virginia Power has posted today's work crews location list.  As of 10:42 a.m., the company reported 170,183 were still without power across the Northern Virginia power region.  ------------  Dominion Virginia Power crews continue to make steady progress toward restoring power to those who lost it late Friday night in the derecho. Dominion: Power Outages May Last All Week

More than 250,000 customers in Northern Virginia are still without power — and officials estimate next weekend for 100-percent return to service in the third-worst outage in Virginia history.

Update - 5:17 p.m. - Dominion Virginia Power released the following statement late this afternoon: "Dominion Virginia Power expects to restore service by Tuesday night for 80-85 percent of customers whose power was disrupted by two days of severe storms at the end of last week. The company expects to restore service to 90-95 percent of affected customers by Thursday night, and virtually all remaining customers by Saturday night. However, it is expected that in areas of the most-severe damage, service may not be restored fully until next Sunday." State of Emergency in VA After Friday Storm

Governor says citizens should prepare for a multi-day power restoration and recovery effort.

Power Restored to Residents After Car Crashes into Pole

Dominion Virginia Power has replaced power pole on Gray Street

A car crashed into a power pole and transformer in Oakton around 2 a.m. Monday, causing hundreds to lose power, Fairfax County Police told WUSA9. The accident, which caused the pole to crash down on the vehicle, occurred on Gray Street near where it intersects with Blake Lane. Nobody was seriously injured in the incident, police said. As of 12:38 p.m., all Dominion Virginia Power customers had their power restored, Dominion spokesperson Le-Ha Anderson told Oakton Patch. After the incident, about 1,000 customers lost power. Within an hour, all but about 485 customers had their power restored, she said.
