One in a series of at-large school board candidates responses to reader questions
Seven candidates will vie for three at-large seats on the Fairfax County School Board in the Nov. 8 elections. As election day approaches, Patch has selected six questions based on submissions from readers and sent them in a survey to all at-large candidates. Over the course of the next week, Patch will run the responses of the six candidates who returned the questionnaires. These responses are unedited, in the candidates' own words. Ten candidates are vying for an at-large seat on the Fairfax County School Board. Patch has asked each of them a series of questions on discipline policy reform - a topic fast becoming a key issue in this crowded race. 1. Do you think the recent reforms passed by the school board changing the discipline policy were appropriate? The June 9 discipline policy reforms were both much needed and long overdue. They improve the Hearing Office’s accountability to families and to the public, and they improve the flexibility of school personnel in handling the infractions of individual students at the local school level. 2. Incumbent Moon receives lone majority endorsement; committee votes to set aside bylaws to award remaining two
After two rounds of ballot voting and several special motions, Fairfax County Democratic Committee members endorsed Ilryong Moon, Charisse Espy Glassman and Ted Velkoff as their candidates in November’s Fairfax County School Board elections, at a Tuesday meeting that became heated when the group voted to depart from its endorsement laws and award two endorsements without a majority. “I think we chose three great candidates,” said Marc Greidinger, a Braddock District Board of Supervisors candidate and FCDC member. “What I tried to do in each vote was choose different people with different strengths.
