Caffe Amouri's 'Get Social' Gives Back to Shepherd's Center

By checking in on social media in February, customers can donate 10 percent of sales to Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna.

February is the month of love — something one local business is trying to spread through a "get social" campaign that will give 10 percent of sales to a local nonprofit. Caffe Amouri owner Michael Amouri launched "Get Social Month" in February as a way to give back to the Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna "to enhance the lives of seniors in Vienna and Oakton." The nonprofit, which serves seniors in Vienna, Oakton, Merrifield, Dunn Loring, Falls Church and Reston, provides a range of services to older residents, from classes and day trips to providing transportation to medical appointments and grocery stores. SCOV Raises More Than $23K in Annual Fundraiser

Swing band boosts fundraising for Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna

About two years ago, the Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna decided to reach out to a broader audience for its annual fundraiser, booking acts with a national appeal to help drive up attendance. After the success of humorist Jeanne Robertson last year, SCOV decided to stick to the plan, inviting Doc Scantlin and his Imperial Palms Orchestra featuring Chou Chou to perform at the Vienna Presbyterian Church in October. The swing band has performed internationally, and their act proved successful both for the audience and SCOV, a local nonprofit organization that assists senior adults with services and enrichment opportunities. Shepherd's Center to Host Swing Band for Fundraiser

Doc Scantlin and his Imperial Palms Orchestra to perform at Vienna Presbyterian Church

Each year, the Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna hosts one major fundraiser to help with its operations for the year.  This year, Doc Scantlin and his Imperial Palms Orchestra featuring Chou Chou, will perform 3 p.m. Sunday at Vienna Presbyterian Church for SCOV's annual benefit show.  Doc, his 18-piece band and his wife Chou Chou will perform swing music, revisiting music from the 1920s, '30s and '40s to a packed house. The music will feature classics from Cab Calloway, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, among other standards. Last year, SCOV pushed for a larger attendance to its annual fundraiser. If you ask Jayne Young, she has always done what anyone else would do if they walked in her shoes. If your child is on a sports team, support the team. If your mother is sick, take care of her. If a good organization asks for help, lend a hand. Humorist Helps Drive Successful Fundraiser for SCOV

Shepherd's Center raises more than $25,000 with Jeanne Robertson show

When Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna set out to expand their fall fundraiser to a larger audience, they could only hope for the kind of turn out Jeanne Robertson attracted. In SCOV's most successful fundraiser to date, a sold-out crowd of 1,200 people showed up to the Vienna Presbyterian Church to see humorist Robertson put on a show. The event raised more than $25,000 for SCOV. Robertson did not disappoint. She addressed the crowd with the ease of simply telling the audience real-life stories that put her captive audience in hysterics throughout the show.
