Oakton Women's Club Installs New Officers

Group selects which charities will receive proceeds from annual fashion show

A little more than a year after the Oakton Women's Club said its membership had neared an all-time low at 15, the group has swelled to nearly 30 members. Of the new members, three have been selected to serve as officers for the next two years. The five-member board was sworn in at their lunch meeting at Marco Polo Restaurant in Vienna on May 9. "We have enough new members now who are willing to take on the responsibility and the offices, which is great," said Linda Byrne, who is the outgoing president and will continue on the board as secretary. "I see the club staying in the same direction of helping our community ... but I also see the younger people coming in who will bring in new ideas and drag us into the 21st century." The board, as …

Historical Marker Honors Florence Jodzies

Women's clubs join together to unveil sign recognizing local activist

When Trish Strat set out to prove the historical significance of the Vale Schoolhouse, she accidentally proved the historical significance of the woman who kept the building open long after its days as a schoolhouse ended: Florence Jodzies. After learning about Jodzies through the application for a highway marker for the schoolhouse, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources nudged her to also submit one in honor of Jodzies. On Tuesday, Vale Club and Oakton Women's Club hosted a celebration of libraries, women's clubs and Jodzies at the Vale Schoolhouse as part of an unveiling ceremony for a historical marker in Jodzies' honor. The marker is located near the intersection of Fox Mill Road and Helmont Drive, near Jodzies' home at Harmony…

Women's Club Continues Fashion Show Tradition

The Oakton Women's Club hosted nearly 150 women at the annual fashion show and luncheon at the Country Club of Fairfax on April 18, continuing a tradition that dates back decades. The event is the club's only fundraising event of the year. The group will decide which local charities will benefit from the proceeds at their May meeting.  The guest list boasts local women involved in local organizations, such as Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna, Vale Club, Fairfax 4 Horses and dozens more.  The club also recognized an involved member of the Oakton community for her dedication to preserving historic areas. Trish Strat earned the club's first "Rising Star" award after securing three historic landmarks in the Oakton-Vienna area, including the …

Thank you Nicole, the photos are wonderful...This year, now that I am now part of the club, I have given up all stereotypes of what I thought women’s clubs are about. Yes, so we are all a little long in the tooth and yes, fashion shows are a throwback to another era but, sharing it with friends old and new, makes it fun. What brought me in was knowing the club was about giving not just money but …   more ›

Women's Club to Give Money to Two Local Charities

Funds raised from fashion show will go toward Shepherd's Center, Virginia Autism Project

Every year, the Oakton Women's Club hosts one event to raise money: a fashion show. And every year, the group meets afterward to decide on where to donate the profits. On May 18, the women gathered at Nancy Rice's home in Vienna to enjoy lunch and decide on how to allocate the nearly $1,700 in profits raised at April's fashion show. The decision: $300 to Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna and $500 to the Virginia Autism Project. The group is setting aside about $1,000 to put toward helping decorate the anticipated roundabouts to be constructed on Hunter Mill Road over the next couple years. The group also used the momentum from the fashion show to gain new members, as some existing members brought interested guests, some of whom had …
