Oakton High Hosts Signing Ceremony for Two Athletes

Elizabeth Manner, Camille Igal commit to Division I programs

Before taking a break for Thanksgiving, Oakton High School celebrated two of its senior athletes with a signing ceremony to commemorate their commitment to Division I athletic programs. Elizabeth Manner signed with Stony Brook University to play girls basketball, and Camille Igal committed to the crew program at the University of Alabama.  Manner, a four-year varsity player, chose Stony Brook from among offers from Loyola (MD), Hartford, Robert Morris, Davidson and others. The 6'1" senior center averaged 11.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game with 10 double-doubles as a junior. In the state final win, she tallied 13 points and 16 rebounds as the Cougars won their first AAA Virginia High School League title. Igal, who has been in the varsity…

Title IX: Fight for Gender Equality Continues

An athletic participation gap between high school girls and boys has increased in the past five years

Click here to read Part I: Girls Sports Thrive at Oakton. ----- Melissa Shebat has played sports her entire life, bringing her talents to three of Oakton High School's varsity sports: field hockey, girls lacrosse and girls swim and dive. Shebat, a two-time All-American swimmer and All-Concorde District second team field hockey player, is a rising senior and has already decided she will not pursue a scholarship for any of the sports she loves because she does not want to give any of them up for one. Part I: Female athletes lead Oakton High to its best year in athletics

The first of Oakton Patch's two-part series on the state of girls sports as Title IX celebrates its 40th anniversary. ----- In March, hundreds of fans cheered on Helen Roberts and the Oakton High School varsity girls basketball team at the Siegel Center in Richmond as they earned the program's first state title. Among them was Helen's mother Barbara, who stood in the crowd beaming at the sight of her daughter's school embracing girls sports in a way she never imagined possible as a high school athlete four decades ago. Roberts, like all girls her age in the San Francisco Bay area where she grew up, did not have the opportunity to participate in organized sports until ninth grade. Varsity Banquet: Oakton High Athletes Honored

In a year that saw Oakton High School sports earn 10 Concorde District titles, five Northern Region titles and three state titles, the athletes had much to celebrate at the 14th annual athletic awards ceremony. Oakton athletes, parents and coaches attended the ceremony at the Waterford on Monday to honor the school's standout athletes. Four Oakton Students Named First Team All-Met

Twenty-two athletes from Oakton High, Flint Hill School earn distinctions

The Washington Post released their picks for the spring 2012 All-Met rosters Sunday, and Oakton's schools contribute a few names. Four Oakton students were given first team honors for their sports: Allison Davis (softball), Carly Palmucci (girls lacrosse), Ahmed Ismail (boys soccer) and Michael Becker (boys rowing).  Davis, starting pitcher for the Cougars, went 15-4 with a 0.32 ERA and notched 187 strikeouts in 134 innings. She posted a .435 batting average. Palmucci scored 46 goals and tallied 55 assists as an attack for the AAA Virginia High School League Champion Cougars. Ismail, a defenseman for the Oakton boys soccer team, scored four goals and led a squad that had 0.92 GAA in the regular season. Three athletes, all female, earned a …
