Tennis: Oakton Boasts Singles District Champs

Katie Clark, Danny Naja earn first place in Concorde District tournament

Katie Clark and Danny Naja each earned first place in their respective Concorde District tennis tournaments Thursday, giving Oakton High School both singles champions for girls and boys tennis. The win (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) against Chantilly's Sara Segalini gives Clark, a junior, her third straight singles district title. Clark also teamed with senior Alina Suyama against Chantilly's Segalini and Akua Donkor in the doubles tournament for their third straight district title (6-1, 6-4).  Naja, a senior in his first year playing with Oakton, defeated Chantilly's Conor Moran for his title win (6-4, 6-2) Thursday.  Both the boys and girls teams will compete in the Northern Region tournament, which begins May 14.

Boys Tennis: Seniors Hope to Leave Legacy of Spirit

Oakton High celebrates Senior Night before 7-2 victory over Westfield

Before the Oakton High boys tennis team defeated Westfield 7-2 on Thursday, they took the time to honor its seven graduating members — a group that transformed the team dynamic in a largely individual sport. When Kyle Delgado was named a captain for his junior season last year, he recruited two friends to the team — Michael Filapponi and manager Chris Abdullah — and with them started to slowly change the way the team perceived itself.  The three have joined with the other four seniors, Kevin Qian, Danny Naja and Delgado's co-captains Alex Tyskowski and Pat Cary, to create a pride in the boys tennis program that has also changed the school's perception of the team. "I'm going to miss changing the face of tennis as a sport in high school," …

Boys Tennis: Cougars Pick Up Win Over Wildcats

Oakton High posts 8-1 win over Centreville on Thursday

The Oakton High boys tennis team posted a dominant 8-1 win over Centreville on Thursday.  The Cougars won five of six singles matches — Cole Johnson, Alex Tyskowski, Alex Ham, J.T. Byrne and Gary Yeh. Pat Cary lost his match in a tiebreaker. Though they had the match already won, the Cougars went into doubles determined to sweep all three games. After the teams of Johnson/Yeh and Cary/Tyskowski each disposed of their opponents with a 10-6 final score, all eyes went court three where Ham and Kyle Delgado, making his varsity debut, battled into a tiebreaker with their Centreville foes. "It was a fun, thrilling match for all ages," laughed Delgado, who is a senior and co-captain. The Cougars rallied around Delgado and Ham, groaning and …

Boys Tennis: Cougars Fall to Rams

Oakton High suffers first loss of the season

The Oakton Cougars entered their boys tennis match against the notoriously dominant Robinson Rams confident they had the ability to earn their first win against the team in at least four years.  The Cougars may have been on the losing end of the 7-2 final score, but the five-point deficit does not reflect just how close the Cougars came to gaining an advantage heading into doubles play. Oakton's Cole Johnson and Pat Cary both pushed their singles matches into tiebreakers, but fell just short of grabbing the win.  "The tiebreakers on [Court] 2 with Cole, and 3 with Pat, had they gone our way, would have put the team in a different state of mind for the doubles," Coach Betsy Tyskowski wrote on the Oakton Athletics site. No. 1 Danny Naja …

Oakton Boys Tennis Brings 'Character' to the Courts

Cougars expect to have a strong season with a new No. 1 player

The Oakton High boys tennis team finished its regular season last year with a 5-5 record, which they think can be improved upon this year with key returners and a secret weapon. The Cougars begin the 2012 season today at Herndon with a senior-heavy team, with three of the eight seniors to compete in the top six. Five of the top six from last year have returned. One senior is new to the Oakton High squad, but will be starting in the No. 1 spot. "No one really knows about Danny Naja yet. He has been training at a tennis academy in College Park for the past two years, so tennis is his life," said Betsy Tyskowski, who is in her fourth year as head coach for the Cougars. "He wanted to come out and play, and we're thrilled to have him. He's got …
