Oakton Elementary Renovations Near Completion

Playground facility, major indoor construction work to be finished before school year begins

When Oakton Elementary School welcomes students next month, it will boast a new playground for them to enjoy. A new blacktop and soccer field next to the school are nearing completion, as the 18 trailers that used to fill much of that space have been removed.  "... [I]t is exciting to think about having a new blacktop and larger field to play on this year," Principal Christine Gray wrote in her renovation blog. This summer's construction work continued the $13 million renovations project that began December 2010. In addition to the new play area, the school has renovated some classrooms and built new ones in addition to new administrative offices, a new library and a renovated auditorium. Oakton Elementary Opens New Doors

New addition opens to students, faculty to start new year

When Oakton Elementary School opens its doors for the new year today, it'll be opening new doors altogether. The addition that has been under construction for more than a year will officially open to students and staff today. It will serve as the new main entrance to the school, with the main office having been relocated to that area and the old entrance for students now closed. A new art room and library is also housed in the addition, and both will be ready to use starting today. More changes are expected at Oakton Elementary in the next couple weeks, as some classrooms will be moved into the addition over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to allow for renovations in the older section of the school. "While the moves are …

Anyone who has driven by Oakton Elementary School recently may have asked themselves, "Don't those construction workers know school starts next week?" They do. And they're ready. The outside appearance of Oakton Elementary is deceiving. In fact, the school has been suitable for faculty and students since last week, said Kevin Sneed, director of design and constructive services for Fairfax County Public Schools. "It’s amazing to see how they have systematically demolished portions of the building, and rebuilt it in only 6 weeks!" wrote Christine Gray, principal of Oakton Elementary, in an Aug. 17 post on her renovation blog. "While it may not look like it from the outside, the building will be ready ..." When the construction crews finish …

Oakton Elementary Prepares for Renovation, Addition

Questions, concerns raised at community meeting

Oakton Elementary School, with its retro façade and growing population, is ready for a complete renovation and significant addition. The project has been planned since 2008 and work should begin in mid-November. At completion, in October 2012, the school size will increase to 91,600 square feet, from the current 71,000 square feet. David Printz, coordinator of Capital Projects, and Brady Rauch, construction manager, both of the Fairfax County Public School's Design and Construction Office met with parents and staff at the school Thursday night to answer questions and give an overview of what to expect during the renovation process. Two display boards outlined the scope and phases of the work that will be accomplished. Printz listed what …
