The third-generation Miller family runs the farm in Madison County, Va. Darletta and Valentine Miller have been selling baked goods for 17 years and before this, the family owned and ran a dairy farm, Darletta Miller said. “I had worked in a bakery for six years prior to our marriage so we decided to start going to farmers' markets and making baked goods and then probably about five years ago, we decided to add meats to that,” Darletta Miller said. This is the second year Knouse Fruitlands is selling its produce off the family farmlands
Selling berries and tree fruits, Knouse Fruitlands is in its second year selling its produce to other farmers markets. Known for its Round Barn near Cashtown, Penn., the Knouse farm has been in the family for four generations. Kevin Knouse is a fourth generation member of the Knouse family who has gone back to the family business. He helps market the Knouse Fruitlands’ produce at local farmers markets. Family farm in the process of transitioning ownership to a new generation
Looking to try a new apple variety? Stop by Kuhn Orchards at the Oak Marr Farmers Market. Grown in Cashtown, PA, near Gettysburg, the Kuhn family farm grows 32 apple varieties as well as other fruits and vegetables. Starting with Israel and Elizabeth Rife Mickley in the 1840s, the land owned and operated under the name Kuhn Orchards has been passed down to multiple generations of the same family, according to Kuhn Orchards’ website. Now, the owners of the Kuhn Orchards are David F. and Mary Margaret Kuhn. The Kuhn farm began marketing its produce in 1993 at a Fairfax market and expanded the next few years to sell at nine farmers markets in the D.C. metro area. Looking for locally grown produce and nice service; stop by Garner's Produce at the Oak Marr Farmers Market. Since 1985, the Garner family has grown fruits and vegetables on their family, Virginia century farm in Westmoreland County for their roadside stand and for farmers markets. Now, the farm is still family owned and is operated by Edward Meade Garner with the help of his daughters, and son-in-law, Bernard Boyle. Having moved and changed its name in the last four years, the Oak Marr Farmers Market offers a variety of vendors at its location at the Oak Marr ReCenter. "If I can, I like to go (to the farmers market) weekly and I like to spend $50 and then stop," said Judith Mensh, an Oak Marr Farmers Market shopper.
