Road Work On Hunter Mill Continues Today

Delays will cause alternating closures after 9 a.m.

Drivers traveling on Hunter Mill Road between Cedar Pond Drive and Silk Oak Drive can expect delays and alternating lane closures Wednesday as Fairfax County crews repair a broken pipe on the new bridge over Difficult Run. Steve Walls, a distribution superintendent with the county's department of transportation, wrote in an email that the broken pipe wasn't having an impact on the bridge itself, but the repair would require taking down a guard rail. Most of the work was completed Tuesday before 4 p.m., he said; crews are returning Wednesday after 9 a.m. to clean up and restore the site. "We planning on being done before 3 p.m., at least with anything that would impact the roadway," Walls wrote. Some commuters were frustrated Tuesday by …

Hunter Mill Road Bridge To Reopen Monday Night

Commuters can access the road about 5 p.m., VDOT says.

A two-lane bridge over Difficult Run on Hunter Mill Road will reopen Monday night after a week-long closure for repairs. The bridge, located between Hunter Station Road and Lawyers Road, closed Nov. 14 as a result of an inspection that showed 13 of the bridge's 14 steel beams are corroding. The new, temporary bridge will be open by sundown tonight, said Virginia Department Of Transportation spokeswoman Joan Morris. The closure, which cut off many commuters' main access point to the Dulles Toll Road, created a traffic headache last week as drivers navigated a 3.2-mile detour that backed up roads into Vienna, Oakton and Reston. A Friday accident on Hunter Station Road made the situation worse for many drivers, putting traffic at a standstill…

The "temporary" bridge looks good. I'm surprised it's not a permanent bridge, but I better watch what I say. It might become permanent based on all the competing requirements for transportation funds.   more ›

Bridge Traffic: How Frustrated Are You?

Are you noticing a backup along Hunter Mill Road?

Commuters on Hunter Mill Road may have noticed a backup in traffic because the two-lane bridge over Difficult Run has been closed for repairs. The bridge between Hunter Station Road and Lawyers Road will be closed to traffic until Nov. 21 so the Virginia Department of Transportation can install a temporary bridge as a result of an inspection that showed 13 of the bridge's 14 steel beams are corroding. How bad is the traffic?

Residents Take Early Interest in Plans for New Bridge

VDOT engineer explains early plans for Hunter Mill Road bridge over Difficult Run to community

Road closures are scheduled for the temporary replacement of the Hunter Mill Road bridge over Difficult Run within the next month, but residents at a community meeting Monday focused on the plans for a permanent bridge that will cost an estimated $3 million. Once in place, the temporary bridge, which is estimated to cost $300,000 and paid for through state maintenance funds, is safe to use for decades if properly maintained, but VDOT hopes to have the permanent bridge planned and constructed in one to three years. VDOT has not yet announced the dates for the temporary bridge construction, but predicts it will be in late August or early September. The road will close over one weekend to allow for construction of the two-lane bridge. "We …

Didn't even realize the name of the creek it crosses. Is the name posted? Over it at least bi-weekly if not more often. Turned back once because of flooding. I think flooding should also be addressed when permanet bridge is constructed.   more ›

Smyth Talks Roundabout with Homeowners

Residents question whether roundabout will address traffic issues on Hunter Mill Road

With the construction of a roundabout at Hunter Mill Road and Mystic Meadow Way on the horizon, residents are asking questions to understand the long-term impact of the project. To address concerned homeowners along the Hunter Mill Corridor, Supervisor Linda Smyth (Providence) hosted a meeting in her Lee Highway office Monday. The meeting allowed residents to speak directly with county engineers about the project, which is slated for completion in 2013. Eric Teitelman, chief of the county's Capital Projects and Operations Division, and W. Todd Minnix, chief of the Transportation Design Division, attended. Because plans are in place to develop Oakton Community Park in the near future — Smyth said she expected the playground portion to be …

A Primer: Oakton Community Park Roundabout

Current plans for traffic calming measures based on results of a 2006 study on Hunter Mill Road.

With more cars traveling Hunter Mill Road as Northern Virginia continues to develop, Fairfax County is trying to balance traffic calming solutions with a desire to preserve the historic Hunter Mill Corridor. To avoid turning Hunter Mill Road into a four-lane thruway, a county study has recommended seven roundabouts and several other road treatments — such as splitters or raised medians — along Hunter Mill Road. No plans have been finalized, but the county has been taking on the project one piece at a time, allowing the three affected magisterial districts — Providence, Hunter Mill and Sully — to find the appropriate time and money on their own. The first roundabout — planned for the intersection of Mystic Meadow Way and Oakton Community …

Here are the facts: The roundabout is a proven way to maintain traffic flow while allowing access to the main road from side streets. There is abundant engineering research documenting the roundabout's effectiveness in communities around the nation and the world. The Hunter Mill Road Traffic Calming Task Force, with community input in the early 2000's, endorsed the use of roundabouts in …   more ›
