Baseball: Huskies End Season in Semifinal Loss

Flint Hill relinquishes hold on MAC crown with loss to Sidwell Friends

After four straight Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference titles, the Flint Hill baseball team lost to Sidwell Friends in the tournament semifinals with a 6-5 final score. "I see every year as a new year, so I wasn't worried about keeping the streak," Coach Tom Verbanic said. "The kids fought until the end and that's what matters. It's a great group of kids, we just came up a little short." The Quakers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and stayed ahead for two innings before the Huskies rallied in the third. Bruce Briglia started the rally after drawing a walk with one out, then pinch runner Jordan Davis stole second base with Felix van der Vaart in the batter's box. Van der Vaart hit a double to left field to put runners on second and …

Passion, Work Ethic Lead Belt to Tribe Baseball

Family tradition of baseball inspires David Belt to pursue a professional career

David Belt's love for baseball is rooted deep within his family tree. His parents met through their love of the sport: One of the first times Terry Belt met his future wife, Sarina, they were both wearing practice uniforms as center fielders for the baseball and softball teams at Bishop O'Connell High School. Terry Belt continued his baseball career at Georgetown University, then as coach of his two sons when they were younger.  Both of David Belt's grandfathers played college ball, one who advanced to a short Minor League career and one who got as far as a tryout for the New York Yankees. Two of his uncles — Bill Grossman and John Morabito, both married into the family — played at College of William & Mary and Wake Forest University, …

Baseball: Huskies Earn Tight Win Over Sidwell Friends

Flint Hill need to end regular season with a win for a chance at first place in the MAC standings

With the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball standings still in flux, Flint Hill's matchup against Sidwell Friends on Tuesday held weight beyond redemption for the Huskies' 13-9 loss earlier in the season. The Huskies' 5-3 victory Tuesday keeps them in contention for first place in the MAC, vying for at least a tie for the top of the standings heading into the conference tournament.  The Huskies took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Felix van der Vaart scored on a throwing error after a David Belt single. Rick Armstrong drove in the Huskies' second run with a suicide squeeze in the same inning. Belt also hit a solo home run over the left field wall in the third inning to put the Huskies up 3-0. Sophomore pitcher Tommy…

Baseball: STAB's Sixth-Inning Rally Sinks Huskies

Flint Hill celebrates seniors in pregame ceremony

After a ceremony to honor its seniors, the Flint Hill baseball team gave up their lead late in the game to fall to St. Anne's-Belfield High School 6-4 on Saturday. As of April 30, the Huskies (14-6) ranked fifth in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. The Saints, with an overall record of 5-18-1, are unranked. "We just haven't been able to find a way to score runs lately, so every game is ending closer than we'd normally expect," Coach Tom Verbanic said. The Saints opened scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single, but the Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning with a line drive double for two RBI from senior shortstop David Belt. The Huskies tacked on another run after senior left fielder Jordan Davis hit a…

Baseball: Huskies Pull Out Comeback, Extra Innings Win

Bruce Briglia hits walk-off single in the eighth inning to lift Flint Hill over Maret

Back in the lineup for the first time after a jaw injury from being hit in the face with a baseball, sophomore catcher Bruce Briglia was anxious to contribute in Flint Hill's Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference game against Maret. And contribute he did. Briglia walked twice, scored two runs and hit two singles for two RBI, one of which scored the game-winning run in extra innings to lift the Huskies to a 13-12 win over the Frogs on Friday. "I thought I was going to suck," Briglia said. "I guess I didn't do that bad."  But before Briglia's heroics, the Huskies and Frogs engaged in an offensive battle that saw both teams go on scoring runs that seemed to end the game only to have the other team answer with a run of their own, pushing them into …

Baseball: Huskies Shut Out Mighty Hoppers

In six innings of work, Tommy Doyle does not give up a hit

With an injury-laden roster, the Flint Hill Huskies found a way to piece together six runs in its shutout victory over Georgetown Day School on Monday. The Huskies first put runs on the board in the third inning when senior Harrison Gray hit an RBI double, scoring Felix van der Vaart who reached base on a walk. The Huskies continued their two-out rally with an RBI double from senior Rick Armstrong and an RBI single from junior Kevin Abt to put the Huskies up 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, van der Vaart hit a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Davis for a score of 4-0.  But with a four-run advantage over the Mighty Hoppers, the Huskies still wanted to expand their lead. "Me personally, I was frustrated. I wanted to hit all day on them, not …

Baseball: Huskies Defeat Panthers in Extra Innings

Christian Tailor draws a walk with bases loaded to defeat second consecutive MAC opponent

In a rivalry game that stretched into extra innings, the Flint Hill Huskies defeated the Potomac Panthers 3-2 on a walk with bases loaded in the eighth.  Tuesday's win is the Huskies' second in a row to put the Huskies' Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference record at 2-0.  After starting pitcher Tommy Doyle held the Panthers scoreless through two innings, the Panthers tallied the first runs of the game on three hits in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Doyle, who pitched six innings, did not allow another run in the game. He struck out six batters and did not give up a walk. Nick Bazzarone closed the game, striking out three and giving up no runs or walks in two innings of work. "[Tommy] wasn't happy with his last outing, but I thought he …

Baseball: Huskies Lose Tug-of-War with Middleburg

Flint Hill baseball to begin conference play Thursday

After a back-and-forth battle that saw at least one base runner in each half-inning, the Flint Hill baseball team fell to Middleburg Academy 9-8 on Tuesday.  The Dragons struck first with three runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Tommy Doyle, who had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Nick Bazzarone, who started in center field, took the mound for the rest of the game to tally four strikeouts of his own. The Huskies responded with two runs after Bazzarone led off with a double, second baseman Felix Van der Vaart was hit by a pitch and shortstop David Belt drew a walk to load the bases for Harrison Gray to knock two in with a groundball to shortstop.  The Dragons tallied another two runs at the top of the second, and the Huskies …

Flint Hill Baseball Hopes Solid Foundation Yields Wins

With most of last year's starters returning, the Huskies expect good results for the season

With six of last year's starting lineup returning to the squad this year, the Flint Hill baseball team feels comfortable it has a solid foundation to start the season. Not only does Coach Tom Verbanic expect solid skills, but he expects them to help raise the talent level of the younger players. "With all this experience, we should also have a lot of leadership," said Verbanic, who is in his second year as head coach at the school.  Two of his starting infielders have committed to play baseball at the collegiate level: David Belt at the College of William & Mary, and Harrison Gray at Babson College.  The Huskies are coming off a 2011 season that brought them their fourth consecutive Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship title. They…
