New State Law Makes Parents, Student-Athletes More Aware of Concussion Symptoms
VHSL rolls out 25-minute course through the NFHS to educate families, coaches on concussions.
High school football programs around Virginia will begin practice this week with new athletes, new plays and a new law. Senate Bill 652, which went into effect July 1, requires each local school division to develop policies and procedures regarding the identification and handling of suspected concussions in student-athletes. The student-athletes and their parents will learn how to spot concussion-related symptoms through a 25-minute concussion course given through National Federation of State High School Associations. will the proliferation of FieldTurf increase incidence of concussions among our high school players? Apparently no one knows. NFLPA found that Astroturf increased concussions 10 fold! Fieldturf is different from Astroturf but no one has produced a study that shows that FieldTurf isn't just as dangerous to our kids.
