A Eulogy for Peter Gallagher Jr.

Family remembers Oakton man killed in Vale Road crash

The following is the eulogy for Peter Gallagher Jr., given by his father Peter Gallagher Sr., his sister Maeve and his uncle George Braley. It is unedited. The Gallaghers hosted a service Friday in honor of 22-year-old Peter, who died in a single-vehicle crash on Vale Road, at St. Mark Catholic Church. "The service on Friday was beautiful and we are so thankful for the support we have received from the community," Gallagher Sr. said. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, namivirginia.org. I am Peter's Dad. This is his beautiful sister, Maeve and his lovely uncle, George Braley. Thanks:             When things that - ‘only happen to other people’ – happen to you – you get the sadness but also the …

It was an honor to be privy to the eulogy and have a glimpse into the short life of a young man whose loss I sense every time I drive or walk down Vale. I can only speak for myself and my family, but I believe the entire community grieves with the Gallaghers for their tragic loss.   more ›

UPDATED: After 11 Hours, Lawyers Road Reopens

Downed wires keep traffic from passing between Galloping Way and Whippoorwill Road

UPDATE 1:17 a.m. Lawyers Road is now open, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation traffic map.  Fairfax County Police were called off the scene about two hours earlier, a dispatcher said around 1 a.m., though barricades remained in place, blocking traffic. The original closure prevented drivers from traveling on Lawyers Road between Galloping Way and Whippoorsville Road; VDOT closed the road up to Hunter Mill Road to complete its repairs, according to its traffic map.The closure lasted about 11 hours in total. Commuters, through email and Twitter, told Patch they were frustrated no signs appeared to let drivers know about the issue, especially as minutes turned into hours and the backup stretched several miles to the Dulles …

I would like to remind everyone that there was a similar traffic-tie-up at the intersection of Lawyer's road and Hunter Mill road a few months ago (last fall, IIRC). During that congestion, Fairfax county was also remiss, failing to deploy enough police to re-route and detour the traffic. Folks, I see a pattern here. Fairfax County government simply is not using our tax dollars wisely. It is time…   more ›

March 19-25: Thoreau Middle Mourns Loss of Student

Board of Supervisors defer vote on the county's participation in Phase II of the Dulles Rail project

Students returning to Thoreau Middle School last week were told they'd lost a classmate and a friend over the weekend. A 56-year-old man from the Ashburn area died Tuesday after his vehicle struck the sound barrier on the Fairfax County Parkway near Franklin Farms Road. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors deferred until April 10 a vote on the county’s participation in Phase II of the Dulles Metrorail project after a public hearing Tuesday night. The supervisors will likely have to appoint an acting county executive after Anthony Griffin retires in late April, buying time while a permanent replacement is chosen, officials say. Fairfax County and FCPS officials laid out the details of the county’s “no-frills” fiscal year 2013 budget …

Thoreau Community Mourns Loss Of Student

Seventh-grade boy died unexpectedly over the weekend

Students returning to Thoreau Middle School on Monday were told they'd lost a classmate and a friend over the weekend. The teens and teachers at the school, along with parents and administrators,  mourned the unexpected death of a seventh-grade boy, with counselors, a psychologist and social worker on hand to support the community throughout the day. In an email to parents late Sunday night, Principal Greg Hood wrote the student's death was "very sad and difficult day for all of us." "This is tragic news for all of us, but especially for the family of the student," Hood wrote. The boy's name and cause of death were not released. On Monday, Hood told Patch that staff is working with the family and the school's business partner, Navy Federal…

Blue Ribbons For Jack

Community mourns 12-year-old Jack Donaldson, who was swept away last week in a Vienna creek's flooded waters

This spring wasn’t looking great for the Dodgers. The team from the Vienna Little League Majors wasn’t putting up the best record, struggling more than winning throughout a particularly difficult season. So it would have been easy – and was easy – for the group of 12-year-olds to give up, to just show up to practices and games and go through the motions. But not Jack Donaldson. “I remember that very much about him: how hard he would swing the bat, how hard he worked in practice, how hard he would go after the ball,” Dodgers Coach Bill Womack said. “I said to the boys, that’s how we should all play, all the time, all season. That’s just the kind of kid Jack was.” Womack and some of those teammates from the Dodgers took time before their …

Community Mourns Death Of Young Hockey Player

Saturday Services planned for 12-year-old Flint Hill Elementary graduate Evan Soggin

At 12 years old, Evan Soggin had already made a name for himself in the local hockey community as a fast ball of energy with a versatility that gave him big-league potential. But he also boasted a list of other accomplishments that looked like it would someday run pages long: He was a hockey star, a budding equestrian, a thespian, a musician, a scholar of Tae Kwan Do, a recent graduate of Flint Hill Elementary School headed for middle school at Thoreau. A jokester who didn't do things quite the normal way but had an uncanny ability to make tears roll down friends' cheeks as their bellies ached with laughter. Above all those things, friends and family say, it is Soggin's smile, loyalty, humor, compassion, spirituality beyond his years and "…

Oakton Resident, Former Frost Principal Dies at 60

Leslie Kent spent her life educating Fairfax teens

The Fairfax-area community lost a beloved middle school principal, talented college admissions consultant, mother and neighbor Thursday. Leslie Kent was born April 14, 1951, and died June 2. She lived in Oakton. The 60-year-old spent much of her life teaching and supporting children through academics. She served as a Fairfax County Public Schools director of instruction in 1989. One year later she started a 13-year career as principal of Robert Frost Middle School. "She was the very sane principal who, when faced with two 13-year old boys who ate alka-seltzer tablets so they could act like monsters with foamy mouths, charged them not with a drug offense but rather with "inappropriate use of science project material" and gave them some in-…
