1968 was the Year of the Pitcher, and headlining it was Bob Gibson, blasting his way through with the lowest single season ERA ever for a starter in the Live-Ball Era.  He gave up just 38 earned runs in 304.2 innings, completed 28 of his 34 starts, and threw 13 shutouts.  Opponents batted just .184 for the season, and he struck out 268 batters.  He topped the NL in ERA, strikeouts, WHIP, BAA, and shutouts while also finishing second in wins and complete games.  As a fielder, he made just one error all season for a .980 fielding percentage and a Gold Glove. The NL MVP went to him as he led the Cardinals to the World Series, though they lost to Denny McLain and the Tigers.  Gibson continued his great pitching, going 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in three Series starts.  Combined with his regular season, he was 24-10 with a 1.17 ERA.  He completed all three of his starts, bringing him to nine career World Series complete games in nine starts.
