SCOV to Open Registration for Winter Classes

Shepherd's Center will begin new session of Adventures in Learning on Jan. 19

On Thursday morning, senior citizens from the Oakton-Vienna area will gather for a "senior student union," as the Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna opens registration for its Adventures in Learning winter session.

The mission of the SCOV is to serve older citizens by ensuring their ability to live independently and offering programs for enrichment and socialization.

The largest way SCOV fulfills its mission is through Adventures in Learning, eight-week sessions three times a year filled with classes like t'ai chi, bridge, health, book club, music history and more.

"The classes keep your mind active. It's good for you," said Jayne Young, SCOV's office administrator. "Intellectual and social interaction is good at any age. Socialization is very important, and this is a wonderful way to make friends."

Each eight-week session, which costs $40, is available to citizens aged 50 years and older and is housed at the on Hunter Mill Road in Oakton.

Seniors can register for classes from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at UUCF. Those interested may also fill out a registration form and mail it to the Shepherd's Center at 541 Marshall Road SW, Vienna, VA 22180 before Jan. 26. Classes begin Jan. 19.

"The open house reminds me of a senior student union, where
these seniors reconnect with friends they have not seen for a while and catch up with each other and their grandchildren [and] activities," Young said.
