NVFS Receives Two Regional Honors

Oakton-based nonprofit earns recognition for work helping families find safe, stable homes

Northern Virginia Family Service's work helping families and children has received much praise in the last month.

The Oakton-based nonprofit received two honors from regional organizations in November: the 2011 Nonprofit Leadership Award from Leadership Fairfax, and Nonprofit Care Provider Project of the Year from HomeAid Northern Virginia.

NVFS assists vulnerable individuals and families in finding new paths to self-reliance.

Leadership Fairfax presents the annual Nonprofit Leadership Award to an organization that has been "transformative and will have mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve people’s lives."

Mary Agee, president and CEO of NVFS, recognized the part Leadership Fairfax has played in helping NVFS be successful.

"We are so proud to receive this special recognition from Leadership Fairfax," Agee said in a statement. "We have received tremendous benefit from their leadership development programs–some of our staff are alumni, and many more alumni have provided services and thought-leadership on key issues that our clients face."

Freddie Mac Foundation presented NVFS with the Nonprofit Care Provider Project of the Year award as part of the Presidents’ Circle Awards at the HomeAid Northern Virginia 10th anniversary Gala and Auction. The award recognizes NVFS' partnership with HomeAid to build an Early Head Start classroom and library at NVFS' SERVE campus in Manassas.

"This program and classroom reaches the youngest victims of our region’s housing crisis with foundational education, health screening, and developmental assessments that are left out of more traditional shelters," said Karen Allen, vice president of the early childhood division at NVFS. "We know that we are helping children not just to survive—but to excel—despite their housing insecurity."

NVFS continues to reach new heights under the leadership of Mary Agee. A great organization helping our community with the needs of individuals on a daily basis. NVFS has a staff and a group of volunteers that excel in what they do for all of us and our Northern Virginia community.
