Werman, UVA Knocked Out Of College World Series

Oakton High grad boasts .455 batting average this series

The University of Virginia played 13 innings in a 3-2 loss to the University of South Carolina on Friday, ending their run in the College World Series.

The game ended on with two throwing errors on bunt plays from Cavaliers closer Cody Winiarski — first to put runners on first and second with no outs, then to advance the lead runner home to score the winning run.

The errors in the last inning followed solid defense from the Cavaliers all game, and stellar pitching from start to finish from both teams.

No. 2 MLB draft pick Danny Hultzen started for the Cavs, striking out eight of the nine pitchers he faced before being pulled from the game due to illness. His reliever, Kyle Crockett, allowed two runs to pull the Gamecocks ahead 2-1. The Cavs scored one in the second inning on an RBI from Kenny Swab. Crockett then pitched three more scoreless innings.

Cavalier Chris Taylor scored on a fielding error in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

Branden Kline, typically a closer, came to the mound in the eighth inning only to find himself in a five-inning pitchers' duel with the Gamecocks' Matt Price. Kline threw 107 pitches, striking out seven and giving up three hits and no runs.

Oakton High graduate , who came into Friday's game hitting .571 in the College World Series, went 1 for 4. His bunt single in the 13th inning to load the bases with no outs was the first hit of the night with runners in scoring position. But a strikeout and double play ended the Cavs' hopes at scoring in the top of the inning.

Werman hit .455 with five hits, three sacrifice bunts, two walks and two RBI in the College World Series. Werman leads the NCAA in sac bunts this year with 27 total.

South Carolina will face Florida in the championship game Monday.
