Werman Scores Game-Winner to Advance UVA in World Series

Werman racks up .571 batting average in College World Series so far

Keith Werman, a 2008 Oakton High graduate, hit 2 for 2 with two sacrifice bunts, scored twice — including the game-winner — and drove in a run for University of Virginia in their 8-1 win over University of California, Berkeley, in an elimination round of the College World Series.

After two scoreless innings, Jared King led off the third inning with a single to shallow center field. Werman followed up with a sacrifice bunt — his 25th of the year, which leads the NCAA — but a throwing error allowed him to reach first base. After King scored on a wild pitch, Werman scored on a sacrifice fly to left field, which would prove to be the game-winning run.

To lead off the fifth inning, Werman singled to left field and eventually got to third base, but the Cavs would not score.

In the sixth, Kenny Swab scored on a one-out single, which yielded a fielding error that allowed him to round the bases. David Coleman followed Swab with a double, but Jared King struck out to bring Werman to the batter's box with two outs. Werman hit another single — this time to center — to score Coleman, and advanced to second on the throw. In the next at-bat, Chris Taylor doubled to score Werman. After an RBI single from John Barr, the Cavs led the Golden Bears 6-0 at the end of the sixth.

Werman had one more at-bat in the eighth, in which he hit his 25th sacrifice bunt of the year.
