Volleyball: Cougars Squelch Hornet Comeback for Win

Oakton High defeats Herndon 3-1 for its second Concorde District win

With a 3-1 victory over Herndon on Tuesday, the Oakton High volleyball team earned its second victory against a Concorde District opponent to start district play undefeated.

The Cougars won the first two sets with convincing 25-16 and 25-15 wins, but the Hornets fought back in the third set with a 25-20 win to prevent a Cougars sweep.

The Hornets kept their momentum in the fourth set, but the Cougars fought back from a 10-6 deficit to win 25-19.

The win puts the Cougars alone at the top of the Concorde District standings early into district competition.

Emma Olson, a senior setter, notched the team's first triple-double of the season and second of her career with 12 kills, 37 assists and 10 digs on Tuesday. She last recorded a triple double Oct. 25, 2011 against Westfield.

Olson also made school history, as her two aces in the game put her atop the career aces list with 123.

Misa Mori, a senior outside hitter, also hit a milestone with aces, as her three Tuesday put her in the top five all-time, surpassing former teammate Kelsey Wildman (2011) with 74 total.

The Cougars will travel to Centreville for their next district match 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
