Oakton's John Stertzer Selected in MLS Draft

Flint Hill School graduate will join the Real Salt Lake this season.

Oakton soccer fans might recognize one of the new faces in Major League Soccer this season.

Oakton native John Stertzer, a graduate of Flint Hill School, was the No. 12 pick overall in the recent MLS Superdraft, scooped up by Real Salt Lake in Utah. 

He'll start training with the club this week.

Stertzer, who graduated from Flint Hill in 2009, played Division I soccer at the University of Maryland. As a Terp, Stertzer scored 25 goals and 13 assists over 79 games.

"He was also a Third Team All-American in his senior season in 2012, when he helped lead Maryland to a NCAA College Cup appearance as well as an ACC Tournament crown and an ACC regular season co-championship," Real Salt Lake reports.

According to Flint Hill School's alumni website, General Manager Garth Lagerwey says "Stertzer is a guy we feel like can contribute for a long time … we’re excited to add another young dynamic kid to our midfield."

Real Salt Lake won the MLS Cup in 2009.
