Though the lost their last home meet of the season Saturday β 223-179 to McLean β the team took time to celebrate in the middle of the meet.
The Otters honored five swimmers who will outgrow the program at the end of the season.
- Michael Shemenski: A native Houstonian who spent summers with the Sharer family and became a member of the Oakton Otter swim team through them. Accomplishments with Otters: Swimmer of the Week numerous times; All-Star relay swimmer 2005, 2006 and 2008; All-Star swimmer in 2007. Plans for next year: St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia to study international relations.
- Kathleen Smith: Potomac School graduate and National Merit finalist with a 4.0 GPA, who captained an undefeated girls soccer team last fall. She has been with the Oakton Otters since age 7 and a coach for four summers. Accomplishments with Otters: Qualified for five individual All-Stars and 11 All-Star relays; two-time recipient of the Coach's Award; and a three-time recipient of the Spirit Award; holds team record in 15-18 50M freestyles; holds team record in 15-18 Freestyle relay. Plans for next year: Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where she will play soccer.
- Christine Johnson: Oakton High graduate who participated in field hockey, and indoor and outdoor track during high school. She is an active volunteer in the community. Plans for next year: Virginia Tech.
- Kaitlyn Power: Paul VI Catholic High School graduate, who has been a member of the Oakton Otters since the age of 8, and served as a practice assistant for the team for three years. Accomplishments with Otters: Made All-Star team after four weeks on the team; Four-time NVSL All-Star individual selection in breast, IM, and fly; nine-time All-Star relay member; top female point-scorer for Otters in 2004. Plans for next year: Turned down a swim scholarship at Catholic University to attend University of North CarolinaβWilmington, where she will likely study biology.
- Leah Utley: A Paul VI Catholic High School graduate, Utley joined the Otters at the age of 7 and has coached with the Otters for three years. Accomplishments with Otters: Won Divisionals at age of 12 for breaststroke; three-time recipient of the Spirit Award Plans for next year: James Madison University to major in interdisciplinary liberal studies with a minor in education. She is enrolled the five-year master's program for elementary education and hopes to be a kindergarten teacher.
