Oakton Grad Wins Fifth National Marathon

Michael Wardian posted a time of 2:23:01 to win the D.C. race

Michael Wardian, a graduate of , won the Suntrust National Marathon for the fifth time in six years Saturday.

Wardian, an Arlington resident, ran the race in 2:23:01.

“I’m never sad to win,” he told The Washington Post. “It never gets boring and I never take it for granted. So every time is special and this race was no different.”

Earlier this year, Wardian received a commendation from the General Assembly for his "outstanding achievements as a marathoner and ultramarathoner."

Among other honors, Wardian was named the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Ultra Runner of the Year by United States Track and Field Association and the 2009 Ultra Runner of the Year by New York Road Runners; earned the fastest time ever by an American in the Marathon des Sables with a time of 23:01:03; and set the world record for indoor 200-meter track marathon with a time of 2:27:21.

Wardian's next scheduled competition is the Two Oceans Marathon (56K) in Cape Town, South Africa on April 24, according to his website.
