Oakton Girls Soccer Thinks Team Effort Will Bring Success

A preview of the upcoming season

Thanks to a 2-0 victory in its opening game on Tuesday against Yorktown High, the Oakton girls’ soccer team started things off impressively, as they look to improve on last year’s 11-6-1 record.

“We have a great group that has grown up playing soccer together,” said head coach Kasey Davenport. “Their experience will provide the leadership for our team, while key newcomers will add depth. I am excited about what this group can accomplish this season.”

With 12 girls returning and six fresh faces on the team, Davenport is thrilled about the makeup of the team.

“Smita Sharma is the team’s senior captain; she is a calming force on the field while working extremely hard,” Davenport said. “Erin Holden has developed into a solid contributor.”

The team also has a strong junior class, led by Alex Weaver, Caroline Coyer, Katherine Coyer, Alex Meyers, Danielle Fitzgerald, Shannon Hardtke, Adelle Clinton, Emma Rouse and Lexi Krall.

Elsewhere on the squad, Davenport calls sophomores Alyssa Morgan and Kristi Carrigan talented hardworking players and believes every last girl will contribute to a winning season.

“We have good depth with role players coming off the bench,” Davenport said. “Each player is special and will contribute greatly to our success.”

In goal, Alex Weaver will be the starter with Stephanie Miller serving as her backup in net.

“Alex is in her second year as a starter,” Davenport said “She has solid hands, and great quickness. We are looking for her to have a big season for us.”

Notable games to keep an eye on this season include away at Chantilly on March 28, home against Robinson on April 7 and away against Herndon to conclude the regular season on May 10.

The team will also look to avenge last season’s losses to Madison on March 24 and South County Secondary on April 11.

“Every game is a big game in our district; anyone can pull off an upset on any given night,” Davenport said. “Naturally, Chantilly and Robinson are rivals for us; we have had great games with them in the past and expect the same this season.”

The district championships start May 16 and the team hopes to be playing in the state final June 11.

Last year, the girls made it all the way to the regional semifinals before being knocked out with a 2-1 loss to Stone Bridge.

“Our greatest strength is our overall team experience and their commitment to winning,” Davenport said. “Our goal is to compete at the highest level every time we step on the field.”
