The Flint Hill Huskies may have lost to Georgetown Visitation 60-46 in the Independent School League Championship on Sunday, but their season is not over.
As the fourth-ranked team in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association, the Huskies will continue their season in the state tournament Wednesday.
On Sunday, the Huskies endured a hard loss to the Cubs, staying in contention for the title until the fourth period.
The Huskies led the Cubs at the end of the first period, sustaining the dominant defense they . They also leaned heavily on 3-point shooting, netting three in the period to help gain their 17-11 advantage at the end of the eight minutes.
But the Cubs adjusted to outscore the Huskies 15-6 to grab the lead, which the Huskies never grabbed back, but still trailed by just three points.
"We really played a smart defensive game, and that's what I told the girls. I told them, 'Everytime we play them, we have to get better.' And I think we did again today," said Coach Jody Patrick in reference to Flint Hill's two losses to Georgetown Visitation, who are undefeated in the ISL, this season.
Though they entered the fourth period with a modest five-point lead, the Cubs went on a scoring spree to put the win out of the Huskies' reach, tacking on 19 points while the Huskies scored 10.
"[The Cubs] executed well and they got a few offensive boards from us. ... They also took their time offensively. The other thing is we didn't want [Kate] Gillespie to beat us, and for three quarters she didn't," Patrick said. "They're a good team. I don't think we lost, I think they won."
Gillespie scored 13 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter. Alex Long led the Huskies with 16 points.
Now the Huskies will look forward to the VISAA tournament. The Huskies have a bye in the first round and will host either St. Stephen/St. Agnes or Bishop Ireton on Wednesday. They defeated both teams earlier in the season.
