Girls Lacrosse: Huskies Lose to Out-of-State Visitors

Flint Hill School loses to Illinois-based team 14-11

Despite a 3-0 scoring streak in the last two minutes of the game, the Flint Hill girls lacrosse team fell short of defeating the Loyola Academy (Ill.) Ramblers to lose 14-11 on Friday.

The first half of the game stayed close, with the Huskies and Ramblers matching each other's goals until the Ramblers pulled away with a 5-2 lead. Lizzie Schwien and Hannah Donegan scored the Huskies' first two goals.

Schwien added another goal with about 10 minutes left in the half, and the scoreboard would stand at 5-3 for almost eight minutes before Courtney Wiley netted a goal to bring the Huskies within one. But the Ramblers added another point with 17 seconds on the clock to put them at a 6-4 advantage heading into the second half.

The Ramblers added to their point advantage in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 8-5 up until the last four minutes of the game. The Huskies mounted a comeback, netting three straight goals — from Caroline Shaw, Donegan and Jillian Goulding — in the last two minutes, but they fell short to lose with a final score of 14-11.

Donegan led the Huskies in scoring with three goals.

Coach Samantha Eustace said inconsistency kept the Huskies from putting together runs throughout the game.

"They just have to put a couple strings of positive things in a row," she said. "You know, a defensive stop and then trying to get two runs together. We'd kind of do one great thing then turn the ball over."

She also said though she believes her team should have been able to pull out a win Friday, she is pleased with the fight the Huskies showed up until the end of the game.

"I think a lot of teams would be like, 'Whatever, there's four minutes left and we're too far gone,'" Eustace said. "So the fact that the team is not giving up, they're fighting for every ball, that's what we're going to use for next game."

The Huskies will travel to Holy Child for a game 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Goals: Hannah Donegan (3), Lizzie Schwien (2), Mary Lewis (2), Jillian Goulding (1), Courtney Wiley (1), Caroline Shaw (1) and Maggie Farrish (1)
