Girls Lacrosse: Huskies Fall in ISL Semifinals

St. Stephens/St. Agnes routs Flint Hill 16-2

Though the Flint Hill Huskies suffered a 16-2 loss to St. Stephens/St. Agnes in the Independent School League Tournament semifinal Sunday, their season continues with their qualification into the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Tournament.

On Sunday, the Huskies managed just one goal in each half — from Lizzie Schwien in the first half and Catie Chess in the second — ending their chance at an ISL title.

Meanwhile the Saints logged 12 goals in the first half and four in the second to dominate from start to finish. Three Saints — Liz Lavie, Michele Phillips and Carly Reed — tied with a game-high three goals each. Katie Austin led in assists with five.

Huskies goalkeeper Ansley Gibson made five saves, while Saints goalkeepers Gussie Johns and Katie Wiseman had two saves each.

"When you come into a game like this, you want to try to keep the score close and shut down certain players and try to possess the ball on offense, and I think we did that OK today," Coach Samantha Eustace said. "I think energy-wise we were lacking a bit after a battle yesterday against Episcopal."

Despite the rout, the Huskies emerged from the game in relatively good spirits knowing they lost to a team likely to advance all the way to the state title game.

"After the game the girls said, 'We learned so much just from watching them,' and that's great. If they can come out of a game like this learning something, I'll take it," Eustace said. "We're a young team so it's just about getting better. I mean, we're the No. 3 seed in the ISL, which is the highest ever for Flint Hill."

The Huskies will continue their season in the VISAA tournament against Bishop O'Connell at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Georgetown University. St. Stephen's/St. Agnes will face Georgetown Visitation in the ISL title game on Wednesday.
