Girls Basketball: Early Deficit Sinks Huskies on Senior Night

Flint Hill falls to undefeated Georgetown Visitation by three points

Despite a valiant comeback effort in the second half, the Flint Hill Huskies fell just short of overtaking Georgetown Visitation with a 59-56 loss Tuesday on Senior Night.

The Huskies fell behind the Cubs in the last three minutes of the first period as the Cubs went on a 9-2 run to solidify their lead. The Cubs widened the point gap with a 7-2 run at the start of the second period, but the Huskies put themselves back into contention with 3-point shooting from seniors Alex Long, Nicole Freeman and Alison Bragaw-Butler, who led her team with 25 points. Long and Freeman posted 15 and 14 points, respectively.

"The final three quarters we outscored them. You can outscore them all you want, but you also need to get the stops and we didn't get them," Coach Jody Patrick said. "I tried to mix it up defensively as much as I could to keep them guessing."

The Cubs' lead stretched to as much as nine points in the fourth, but the Huskies pulled to within one point at 55-54 with a little more than a minute left in the game. But the Cubs tacked on four more points versus the Huskies' two to come out on top to complete their undefeated season within the ISL.

Patrick said she has been impressed all season long by her team's sticktoitiveness, and Tuesday night was no different.

"This team never gives up, it's been like that all season. I've been proud of them all season for that," Patrick said.

Tuesday's matchup marked the last regular season home game for the squad's five seniors, which the school celebrated with a ceremony before the game.

"I'm really losing a person at every position with these seniors, and I'm really going to miss this group's resiliency. We've had some first quarters where we've been really pinned back and they've been able to come back," Patrick said. "And then the leadership they bring we'll miss. It's just a real nice group of girls."

The Huskies end their 2011-12 season with a 9-5 conference record. They will begin the ISL tournament at home Friday.
