Football: Cougars Lose Second Straight

Oakton High falls to undefeated Westfield

Though they hoped to make up for last week's Homecoming loss to Chantilly, the Oakton Cougars fell short with a 28-14 loss to undefeated Westfield on Friday.

The Cougars' record in the Concorde District stands at 1-2 with two more regular season games left, while the Bulldogs stand alone atop the rankings with a 3-0 record.

In Friday's matchup at Westfield, the Bulldogs struck first with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Cougars answered with senior running back Mike Wandey's 34-yard run to even the score.

But the Bulldogs' passing game proved to be the Cougars' undoing, as 46- and 95-yard passes from quarterback Chris Mullins to receiver Devon Burns put the game out of the Cougars' reach.

The Cougars scored one more touchdown on a 7-yard run from Kyle Downer, but the Bulldog defense kept the Cougars from scoring again. The Bulldogs added one more touchdown in the third quarter to put the final score at 28-14.

Downer led the Cougars with 164 rushing yards and 98 passing yards. Wandey added 99 rushing yards, while Kelly Brooks-Muse tallied 42 receiving yards.

The Cougars will fight to even their district record in this week's game against Robinson (2-1), which also serves as the Cougars' Senior Night.
