Flint Hill Softball Hopes for Consistency This Season

Coach Andy Krug looks to finish season with a winning record again this year

Coach Andy Krug has invested 14 years into the Flint Hill softball program. He started as an assistant coach when the program first started in 1994 under then Head Coach Sabrina Moore.

After taking over as head coach in 2009, Krug was able to continue the Huskies' above-.500 record, including last year's 9-8 effort in the regular season.

"I think the truth is we're pretty competitive in the [Independent School League], and we've been able to keep that consistency every year," Krug said last week.

Despite a in the season-opener against National Cathedral School on Tuesday, Krug's assessment remains the same: "I think this league is full of teams like us, like them, that are closely matched. There are maybe one or two teams that are better than others, but we're all pretty much similar."

Krug was reluctant to make a prediction on just how well he thinks the Huskies will do this season, both noting a large turnover because of graduation and interest in other sports, and name-checking his senior captains β€” Emily Hall, catcher; Bianca Scobie, third base; and Virginia Boies, shortstop β€” as strong players who could lead an inexperienced team to victory.

Hall, who plays catcher, has with Gettysburg College in the fall.

As for strategy, Krug says he'll do what any coach does: rely on strengths and work on weaknesses.

"We've got a great battery [pitcher-catcher] and a great infield up the middle," Krug said. "I'm trying to convince the kids who are playing the outfield and some of the other positions that really, they don't have to be stars, they need to make the routine plays."

He also wants his team to get a little better about being aggressive at the plate.

"If they do that, put the ball in play and make those routine plays, I think we'll be fine," Krug said.

The Flint Hill softball season continues Thursday with a 4:15 p.m. game at Bullis.
