Flint Hill Marks Homecoming with Dominant Wins

Soccer programs, football victorious Saturday

Flint Hill School's Homecoming 2011 celebrations culminated in a day's worth of sports and carnival games Saturday, with the Husky athletic teams going three for four.

The day started with a loss from the volleyball team. Though the Huskies won the first set, Holy Cross took the next three for the win.

As Flint Hill supporters made their way to the athletic fields, they could play plenty of carnival games or visit some of the tables offering goods in exchange for a donation to either a charity or Flint Hill organization.

While some chose to stay close to the fair, others ventured over to the soccer field to see the boys then girls play against School Without Walls.

Flint Hill boys soccer had little trouble adjusting for the absence of five players Saturday, starting their run toward a shutout win within five minutes into the first half.

Matt Montagne scored the first goal for the Huskies, and Narayan Taterway added another a little more than 10 minutes later.

Though the Huskies kept the ball in the Penguins territory for most of the game, they would not score again until the last minute of the game, putting the final score at 3-0.

"I thought in spells we passed the ball around really nicely today," said head coach Chris Brown. "I'd like to see a little more killer instinct in the final third, take our chances more. We create a lot of chances, but only had three goals to share for it. But three goals, three-nothing win on Homecoming, I'll take that."

In the final week of regular-season play, the Huskies have two tough matchups: Potomac School and Sidwell Friends. They'll travel to rival Potomac School on Tuesday.

In Flint Hill's previous game against Sidwell Friends, the Quakers shut them out 4-0, so the Huskies will be looking for vengeance against the best team in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference at home Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Huskies added another shutout win to Saturday's scoreboard with a 6-0 victory over School Without Walls from the girls soccer team.

It took a few minutes for the girls to settle in, but after 17 minutes of the first half, the Huskies scored their first goal and tacked on four more before the end of the half.

In the second half, Coach Cory Hanks used the large lead to allow second-string players to gain playing experience. With five minutes left in the game, the Huskies tacked on its last goal to post a final score of 6-0.

Kasey Casella, Maddie Farrish, Carlin Pierce and Savannah Block each scored a goal. Madison Crowe scored two for the Huskies.

With the toughest part of their schedule far behind them, the Huskies are looking to maintain a good position through the last week of the season into the Independent School League tournament.

"The biggest thing is we've had some pretty up and down games as a result of missing some players the last few weeks," Hanks said. "I think everybody's gotten a chance to play and that'll be good for us moving forward."

The Huskies will travel to Madeira for their next game at 4:15 p.m. Monday.

FOOTBALL

As the main event in the day's Homecoming activities, the football game did not disappoint Huskies fans.

The Huskies pummeled the Maret Fighting Frogs 54-15, but they did start the scoring frenzy until after they went down by 7 points a few plays into the game.

On the kickoff return, Chrystian Brown ran 83 yards to score the Huskies' first points.

About five minutes later, a punt from Hunter Windmuller put the Frogs at their own 2-yard line, and the Huskies capitalized. Ben Kase sacked the quarterback in the end zone for a safety, putting the Huskies up 9-7.

A little more than a minute later, the Huskies recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown one play later on a 14-yard run from Trevor Ogundepo to put the score at 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. After a touchdown pass from quarterback Andy Rehberger to Brown in the second quarter, the Huskies stood at 23-7 heading into the half.

The Huskies would score four more touchdowns — two from Conor Chess and one each from Jerrod Reed and Robert Ruchs — and a field goal before the end of the game, with the Frogs adding one touchdown with a two-point conversion to end the game at 54-15.

"It was a team effort. Offense, defense, special teams, everybody contributed and that's what made it a special day," said head coach Michael Wright.

Wright sees good things for the Huskies heading into two tough games to end the season.

"If we keep playing the way we've played the last couple of weeks, I think we'll do well. We had a bit of a turnover problem when we played [Bishop Ireton] a few weeks ago, but if we can keep the turnovers to a minimum, we want to be able to stay in the game with anyone."
