Field Hockey: Shutout Win Extends Cougars' Season

Oakton High to face National District's No. 1 seed in second round of Northern Region tourney

Surpassing the 2011 squad's performance in the Northern Region tournament, the Oakton High field hockey team posted a 3-0 victory over Washington-Lee High to advance to the second round.

Two years ago, the Cougars advanced to the regional semifinals, where they lost 2-1 to the Generals .

The Cougars scored their first goal about 12 minutes into the first half on a shot from senior Annalise Capalbo.

Though Capalbo's goal proved to be enough for the win, the Cougars added two more from Bailey Uitz and Jennifer Prosser.

"Our goal was to get out there and score as often and as early as we could," Capalbo said. "I thought we delivered. We didn't get as many goals as we wanted, but I think we played really well."

The Cougars will travel to South County for the second round of the Northern Region Tournament for a game 7 p.m. Thursday.

"South County is a good team, so we'll just really try to play the best we can to really prove ourselves," Capalbo said. "I think if we keep playing like we have been, we have a good chance in this tournament."

The Cougars' strategy for Thursday's game remains the same it has been for each match of the season: play their game, not their opponents.

"I expect us to keep playing Oakton's game, keep their composure, keep the ball on their stick and stay disciplined," Fleischmann said. "They know what to do."
