Field Hockey: Cougars Advance to Concorde District Final

Cougars defeat Wildcats 2-1 in district semifinal game

The Oakton Cougars barely lost anytime in their first District playoff game against Centreville on Wednesday before forward Kara Leonard sent in a hard, strong shot for Cougars' first goal less than two minutes into the game.

Oakton put forth a strong offense, maintaining possession the majority of the first half with Alex Revel, Adelle Clinton, Jenny Bailey and Colleen Gleason holding the line on Oakton's side of the field.

Cougar forwards Leonard, Jacki Rupp and Melissa Shebat continued to pepper shots on Centreville's goalie. When Centreville did cross past the 50-yard line, Cougar goalie Mira Tanenbaum charged out of the box to reject the offensive move by Wildcat Molly Donovan.

But on a corner called for the Wildcats, Katherine Zempolich received a bouncing inbound and managed to send it into the net to tie the score before the end of the first half.

Oakton defense began to take over in the second half, with strong play by Amanda Amraen, Michelle Doran, Danielle Somadelis and Danielle Palmucci.

Oakton managed to settle into scrum after scrum in front of the net, and many Cougar sticks helped Kara Leonard score the second goal of the game.

Final score was 2-1 in favor of Cougars, who will play for the District championship Friday night against Westfield in which they hope to hold on despite injuries sidelining Emily Corridon, Maggie Toye and Bailey Epperson.

The Concorde District Championship is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Westfield.
