Oakton girls team advances to championship game

Winter break might mean rest and relaxation for most high-schoolers, but not for basketball players. Tournaments are being held all around Northern Virginia this week, including Oakton, and all four squads from Oakton Patch's schools are taking part.

COUGAR HOLIDAY CLASSIC

The Oakton High girls team advanced to the championship game of their own Cougar Holiday Classic tournament with a 62-35 win over McLean High on Wednesday night.

For the second day in a row, the Cougars kept their opponents to single-digit periods for three quarters.

Caroline Coyer dominated offensively, posting a game-high 21 points. Elizabeth Manner also scored in the double-digits with 12 points of her own.

The Cougars will face Stone Ridge in the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

BULLDOG BASH

Both the girls and boys Flint Hill School teams lost in the second round of the 10th annual Bulldog Bash on Wednesday.

Girls

The girls fought out a tough battle against Westfield, but fell short of the win with a final score of 47-42 in the Bulldogs' favor.

The Huskies went into halftime with a 21-14 lead, but the Bulldogs closed the gap in the third period to bring their deficit to four points. The Bulldogs continued their strong offense into the fourth to outscore the Huskies 23-14, which earned them the victory.

The Huskies' Alex Long posted the most points in the game with 24, 12 of which came through 3-pointers.

Boys

The boys lost 68-43 to McLean High in a disappointing rout for the typically strong Huskies.

The first and fourth periods proved to be the Huskies' downfall, with the Highlanders outscoring them 15-4 in the first and 25-13 in the fourth.

Mo Berchie led the Huskies offense with 16 points, and Brian McDonald tacked on 10 of his own.

The boys will face Westfield at 5:30 p.m. to determine third and fourth places.

MOUNT VERNON HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

The Oakton High boys team lost in a 50-48 heartbreaker to Dunbar High on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cougars led the game until the fourth period behind a dominating offensive performance from Michael Fradette, who scored a game-high 17 points.

Heading into the fourth period, the Cougars led the Poets 39-27. But the Poets outscored the Cougars 23-9 in the fourth to earn the win.

The Cougars will face Clinton Christian School at 1 p.m. Thursday to determine seventh and eighth place.
