Basketball Roundup: Holiday Tournaments, Day 1

Both Flint Hill squads see clutch last-second shots in regulation play

Winter break might mean rest and relaxation for most high-schoolers, but not for basketball players. Tournaments are being held all around Northern Virginia this week, including Oakton, and all four squads from Oakton Patch's schools are taking part.

Boys

The boys played first, facing Annapolis Area Christian School in a tight, hard-fought game right up until the last second: With the score standing at 62-62 with .6 seconds left on the clock, the Huskies' Troy Thomas netted the game-winning foul shot.

The Huskies went into halftime down 31-28, but battled back in the third period to dominate the Eagles 23-12. The Eagles bounced back in the fourth period outscore the Huskies, but Thomas' foul shot prevented a full comeback and overtime.

Down 37-35 just before the buzzer, the Eagles' Alexis Mayo posted two points to send the game into overtime.

But the last-second shot did not fluster the Huskies, as they shut out the Eagles in overtime to put the final score at 47-37.

For most of the game, the scoring stayed about even, with the Eagles at a 24-20 advantage heading into halftime.
