The Lyrac Street community welcomed home its neighbor, Lt. Col. Tom Nelson, who had been serving in Afghanistan for the past years. The neighbors planted flags and posted signs along the street.

Election 2011

No member of the Fairfax County School Board has won the seat without a political party's endorsement, but board members say politics winds up having little to do with the decisions made.

The Fairfax County Office of Elections for Election Day. As of Friday, the county had 1,835 workers scheduled for Tuesday, but needs 2,188 more.

Candidates for the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors answered a questionnaire from Patch that addressed six questions:

  1. Should Fairfax County , as some surrounding jurisdictions, or allow VDOT's continued control? Explain.
  2. According to the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (Table 7 in the Tysons Comprehensive Plan), there are about $1.6 billion in unfunded road and transportation costs in the development of Tysons.
  3. Virginia Railway Express CEO Dale Zehner says the system is at capacity, and money is needed to "maintain the service levels we have today in cleanliness, customer care and mechanical maintenance, while at the same time working toward adding more cars to the trains and more trains to the system."
  4. The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) school renovation Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget currently receives nearly all funding from Fairfax County bonds. FCPS Chief Operating Officer Dean Tistadt has repeatedly warned that current CIP funding levels are not sufficient. β€œThe capital program annual spending limit of $155 million, established by the Board of Supervisors, is inadequate to meet the capital needs of the school system as shown in the School Board’s annual capital improvement program. The lack of adequate funding means that many schools are not being renovated in a timely manner and too many schools have trailers to address overcrowding."
  5. The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority weekly reports in its newsletter the relocation of mega-firms into the county.
