Oakton Students Win First Place Awards at Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference

State officer and Oakton student Jack Chapman was elected as executive vice president.

Three Oakton High School students earned first place awards at the Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference, which took place from March 1-3 in Virginia Beach.

The students included Briana Phan for apparel and accessories marketing, as well as the buying and merchandising team of Sean Berenbaum and Mark Berenbaum. Additionally, state officer and Oakton student Jack Chapman was elected as executive vice president.

They are now eligible to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference scheduled for April in Anaheim, CA.

A total of 20 individuals or teams of students from 16 Fairfax County Public Schools high schools earned first place awards, three additional state officers were elected from FCPS schools and three students received scholarships.

· State Officers Elected from FCPS: Callie Hern of Chantilly High School was elected Region 2 vice president; Mahi Pallapolu of Fairfax High School was elected historian; and Sarah Walters of Robinson Secondary was elected reporter.

· Fairfax High School: Shelby Monnin and Amanda McGuire, Buying and Merchandising Research; Yujin Jeon and Katherine Knight, Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan; Noah Delisi, Food Marketing Series; and Sophia Lam, Hotel and Lodging Series.

· Lake Braddock Secondary School: Kayleen Lynch and Katherine Patterson, Advertising Campaign; and Karan Baboota, Alex Hunter, and Emily Moran, Entrepreneurship Written.

· Madison High School: Phillip Davine and Alex Lowe, Financial Team; Taylor Kramer, Job Interview; Sofia McKewen, Principles of Marketing; and Robert Wetherington and Kyle Mancini, Sports and Entertainment Team.

· Marshall High School: Jocelyn Golden and Maggie MacDonnell, Business Law and Ethics Team; Dany Chaillo, Jackson Lee, and Caroline Vaughn, Sports and Entertainment Promotion Project; and Ryan Lucas and Nate Scott, Travel and Tourism Team.

· McLean High School: Ayesha Faisal, Nidhi Sunderam, and Taylor Brown, Entrepreneurship-Growing Your Business.

· Robinson Secondary School: Margaret Araneo and Charlotte Lowe, Learn and Earn Project.

· South County High School: Natalie Pasquel, Entrepreneurship Participating-Franchise; and Paige Winstead and Katie Yoon, Sports and Entertainment Research.

· West Springfield High School: Meronne Teklu and Heidi Abou-Ghayda, Hospitality and Tourism Research.
