Flint Hill School Earns Environmental Recognition

The Oakton private school has received the honor three times

For the third time in school history, the state of Virginia has recognized Flint Hill School for its environmental education program.

Flint Hill School is one of 48 schools in the state of Virginia to be honored as a Virginia Naturally Schools, in recognition of its efforts in supporting environmental conservation and stewardship.

The school's program — run by Jessie McKinney, science teacher for grades junior kindergarten through sixth and Science Department Chair — also received the honor in 2001 and 2002.

The Virginia Naturally School program is the official environmental education school recognition program for the state, honoring schools that have taken exemplary efforts to increase the environmental awareness and stewardship of its students.

"This recognition is a reflection of our commitment and determination to make a difference—not for an award, but because it is the right thing to do!" Headmaster John Thomas said.

The recognition comes after the establishment of a native plant nursery on the Lower and Middle School campus, participation in the Monarch Migration program, in which students observe caterpillars transforming into Monarch butterflies in their science class and then release them back to nature; and ongoing efforts with the shad restoration program.

“Teaching students to be leaders in this arena, to be strong and vocal advocates and stewards of our environment, is a life skill that will have an impact on all of us," Thomas said. "We are very proud of Mrs. McKinney and all the students who have stepped forward as active participants in our schoolwide efforts."
