Three Days Later: A Guide for Oakton Residents

A few tips for Oakton residents in the aftermath of the derecho.

Dominion Virginia Power estimates 88,912 customers in Fairfax County remain powerless after Friday's derecho, including at least hundreds in Oakton also in the dark.

Dominion crews will be on site at the following Oakton locations today: 

  • Rosehaven Street at Chain Bridge Road
  • Bushman Drive & Valentino Drive
  • Fox Mill Road & Stuart Mill Road

As of about 9:15 a.m. the following roads in and around the Oakton-Vienna are closed because of debris, according to 511virginia.org:

  • Fox Mill Road, from Foxvale Road to Vale Road (Oakton)
  • Fox Mill Road, near Proffitt Estates Court (Oakton)
  • Rosehaven Street, near Spruce Street (Oakton)
  • Hickory Hollow Lane, near Hickory Forest Drive off Hunter Mill Road (Oakton)
  • Hunter Mill Road, from Silk Oak Drive to Tamarack Drive
  • Clarks Crossing Road, near Timberview Court (Vienna)
  • Birdfoot Lane, from Stuart Mill Road to Lawyers Road (Vienna)
  • Lawyers Road, near Hunter Mill Road (Vienna)
  • Dawes Ave, near N. Chambliss St. (Bailey's Crossroads)
  • Prince William Drive, from Coronado Terrace to Hamilton Drive (Mantua)
  • Barkley Drive, from Hamilton Drive to Glenbrook Road (Mantua
  • Juniper Street, off Lee Highway (Merrifield)

Caution at Intersections

More than 80 intersections in Fairfax County remain without working traffic lights, according to county staff.  Drivers are reminded to obey four-way stop rules at intersections without power:

  • Treat each traffic light as a four-way stop, with the driver on the right having the right-of-way.
  • Proceed with caution only when traffic permits.
  • Enter intersections only when it is safe to do so, using turn signals to let other motorists know your intentions.
  • Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Watch out for and obey police officers directing traffic within intersections.

Fairfax County provided this sampling of the major intersections without working traffic lights as of Monday morning:

  • Route 123/International Drive
  • Route 7/Beulah
  • Route 50/Gallows Road
  • Route 50/Nutley Street
  • Route 1/Telegraph Road
  • Lorton Road/I-95
  • Hummer Road/Gallows Road
  • Fort Hunt/Belle Haven
  • Baron Cameron/Fairfax County Parkway
  • Reston Parkway/Lawyers Road
  • Route 50/Stringfellow Road

Stay Cool

If you're without power, consider getting relief from the heat at the closest recreation center or library branch. Both Oak Marr Recreation Center and Oakton Library have power and are open today.

Clearing Debris

Residents can use Fairfax County's two disposal facilities, which accept tree branches that are 20 inches or less in diameter, to rid their yard of debris:

  • I-66 Transfer Station
    4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax
    Monday-Saturday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • I-95 Solid Waste Complex
    9850 Furnace Road, Lorton
    Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Special July 4 schedule:

  • I-66 Transfer Station
    9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for deliveries from residents only
    9 a.m. to 6 p.m. brush accepted from commercial haulers
    NO TRASH from commercial haulers
  • I-95 Solid Waste Complex
    7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for deliveries from residents only
    7 a.m. to 6 p.m. brush accepted from commercial haulers
    Trash from commercial haulers accepted from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The facilities charge a minimum $5 fee for residents. Payment may be made by cash, Visa or MasterCard. If residents utilize the county's trash collection services, they must call to schedule a brush pickup at 703-802-3322. Others should contact their own trash collection company for instructions.
