Officials Warn of Scam Promising Money From Deceased Relatives

Be on the lookout for an email claiming that you have unclaimed property.

The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators along with the Virginia Treasury Department are warning about the new scam.

Consumers receive an email claiming to be from the NAUPA regional auditor, Alexis James, according to a press release from NAUPA.

The email promises a large sum of money from a deceased relatives, all the consumer has to do is provide personal information.

NAUPA says that Alexis James does not exist in the organization and that they do not send emails about forgotten or missing funds.

Contact information and links to all state unclaimed property programs can be obtained at  www.unclaimed.org. Consumers can also search over 40 states for free at www.missingmoney.com, the only official collective database of state unclaimed property owner data.

Any suspicious unclaimed property communication can be reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) online at www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx.
