May 16-22: School Board Works Toward Budget Consensus

Cougars advance in playoffs in several sports

The School Board met several times last week ahead of its May 26 budget adoption meeting. On Monday, they discussed new at a work session. They then to the public at the budget hearing Tuesday, where pleas in favor of full-day kindergarten and employee compensation dominated.

Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, her reelection campaign last weekend telling supporters, “It is no accident that Fairfax County is acknowledged as the best-managed county of its size in the United States. Continuity matters, as does strong, consistent leadership.”

With playoff season in full swing, many Oakton teams are maneuvering their way toward Concorde District, regional and state titles.

One Oakton crew boat, the took first place at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships with a time of 5:52.2, qualifying for the national competition to take place Memorial Day weekend in Camden, N.J.

After rival Potomac in the semifinals, the Flint Hill Huskies baseball squad its fourth consecutive Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference title with a 9-4 win over Sidwell Friends.

The Oakton girls lacrosse team won round one of the regional tournament against and round two against to advance to the Northern Region semifinals.

The boys lacrosse team did not have as much luck. Despite mounting a comeback, they to Langley in the quarterfinals.

The Oakton boys soccer team had a bizarre semifinal round in the Concorde District tournament. The game was with 43 seconds left in the first half  because of lightning Wednesday. The Cougars were up 1-0 over Robinson and stayed on top when the game continued the next day. They went on to Herndon in the Concorde District Championship game to give the boys soccer team their first district title in 10 years.

The girls soccer team also earned the Concorde District title, the first-ever in school history, with a over Westfield on Friday. The game-winning and only goal of the game came from senior Caroline Coyer in the first half.

With the return of freshman pitching phenom Allison Davis, the Oakton softball team Centreville in the first round of the district playoffs. But when Davis woke up a little sore after her first outing in weeks, Coach Ray Gordon decided not to start her and the Cougars to Westfield in the semifinals because of mental mistakes.

The Oakton baseball team overcame a four-run deficit in the first inning to Chantilly and move on to the Concorde District Championship game, thanks to a persistent offense and stellar pitching from reliever Taiyo Francis.

Oakton's track and field teams in the district championship meet, with the girls earning the title for the second year in a row. The boys fell just short of the title, coming in second by one point.

Flint Hill's Britt Savage the state title in the 300 meter hurdles Saturday to bring the Oakton school its only state champion this spring.
