LeMunyon: Conservatives Do Value Community

Individualism has not taken over conservative ideals, delegate says.

Del. Jim LeMunyon (R-67th District) argues conservatives still care about community while putting an emphasis on individualism in a Letter to the Editor to the Washington Post.

LeMunyon submitted the letter in response to E.J. Dionne's column "Conservatives Used to Care About Community. What Happened?" on May 24.

"Today's conservatives generally support a government role in providing infrastructure, education, a social safety net and basic ground rules for our economy as part of a balance between individual liberty and community," LeMunyon wrote, published May 29. "But we object to the imbalance created by the steady accumulation and expansion of federal programs that now consume a quarter of the nation’s economic output and a soaring debt approaching 100 percent of gross domestic product, with little regard for fixing or closing programs that have outlived their usefulness or might be implemented better by state and local governments or private entities."
