Howell-Forrest Race Exceeds $1M, Records Show

The campaign efforts of Sen. Janet Howell (D) and challenger Patrick Forrest (R) for the 32nd Senate District seat exceeded $1 million.

At $1,049,231, theirs is one of 13 Senate races in Virginia to top the $1-million mark.

Incumbent Howell outspent her challenger nearly 2-1 and won 60 percent of the vote, according to records reported to the Virginia Public Access Project.

Forrest raised a little more than $300,000. Contributors to his campaign included the Virginia Republican Party and the Republican Senate Caucus, which together contributed more than $46,000. Well-known Reston developer Christopher Walker, who died in August, donated nearly $50,000 in office space to Forrest.

New York businessman Paul Singer also contributed $10,000 to the campaign.

Howell, who was elected to her sixth term, received about $175,000 from the state Democratic Party and the Senate Democratic Committee. Her largest individual contributors included $15,000 from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association of Henrico County and $10,000 Alexandria developer Myron P. Erkiletian.

The 32nd Senate District saw significant boundary changes, which made the area slightly more Democratic. Howell chairs the Senate committee that oversaw redistricting.
