Election 2011: How Oakton Residents Voted

A look at five precincts that encompass Oakton voters

In the last 10 years, Oakton voters have tended , showing dissatisfaction with the incumbent.

The majority of Oakton voters attend five precincts, though some Oakton residents do attend others. For our analysis, we've looked at the five major ones and how they voted in the General Assembly, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and school board races:

  • Blake: Precinct located at Oakton High School.
  • Oak Marr: Located at Oak Marr Recreation Center.
  • Oakton: Located at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax.
  • Vale: Located at Crossfield Elementary School.
  • Waples Mill: Located at Waples Mill Elementary School.

This year, Oakton voters largely stuck with incumbents, the exception being the Fairfax County School Board at-large race in which just one of the six candidates vying for three seats was an incumbent.

The at-large school board race also saw the only result where Oakton voters differed from the overall results. If it were up to Oakton, Sheree Brown-Kaplan would be on the board instead of Ryan McElveen as the only Republican-endorsed at-large member.

Patrick Forrest nearly edged out Sen. Janet Howell (D) among voters in the Oakton precincts in their race for the 32nd Senate District seat, falling short by one vote.

For the first time since 1999, voters in the 34th Senate District re-elected an incumbent. Sen. Chap Petersen (D) won 65.58 percent of the district vote over challenger and Oakton resident Gerarda Culipher (R), and Oakton voters followed the district's lead. Petersen won 56.18 percent of the Oakton precincts' votes.

Below are the five major precincts' results, not including the two unopposed races — Patty Reed for Providence District School Board and Del. Mark Keam (D-35th District) — nor the 36th Delegate District race between Del. Ken Plum (D) and Mac Cannon (R) because a small portion of Oakton residents vote in that race. Not all precincts voted in each race.
