Culipher In Favor of State Mortgage Interest Deduction

Candidate makes announcement in response to news of possible elimination

said Monday if elected, she would propose a Virginia mortgage interest deduction if Congress' supercommittee, formed under the debt ceiling deal, decides to eliminate it at the federal level.

Through the mortgage interest deduction, those with home loans can deduct the interest they pay from their taxable income.

"[The elimination] will serve as a direct and yet another assault on the middle class here in America as we know it," Culipher (R) said in her video statement.

She said her legislation would use Virginia's long-term medical premium deduction as a model.

"Where Washington fails us, Virginia can and will step up to the plate and protect your home and your ability to sell it or buy it," Culipher said.

Culipher, of Oakton, is challenging state for the 34th District seat. Election Day is Nov. 8.

In response to Culipher's announcement, Petersen (D) wrote in an email he supports a simplified tax system with a minimum of deductions, which he said would make the rate lower for everyone.
