County Seeks Feedback on New Land Use Initiative

Fairfax County officials want input on "Fairfax Forward," an alternative to the current system used by the county to make land use decisions.

Fairfax County residents have a little more than two weeks left to leave submit comments on the new Fairfax Forward initiative, which will be an alternative to the Area Plans Review (APR) process for managing the county’s Comprehensive Plan.

Representatives from the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning gave community presentations on Fairfax Forward last summer.

Through the initiative, Fairfax County hopes to increase community involvement by updating parts of the Comprehensive Plan such as the Comprehensive Land Use Plan Map and the Future Development Land Classification System.

According to a presentation given last year by officials, the county reviewed the APR process in 2011 and discovered through online survey responses residents found the process to be “rigid” and provided “inadequate community involvement.”

Fairfax Forward will follow planning activities for a period of three years and review the items every two years.
