Army Terminates Soldier Who Killed Sharrett

After investigation into Oakton High graduate PFC David Sharrett II's friendly fire death, Army dismisses soldier responsible

Military officials have determined the soldier who shot and killed PFC David Sharrett II, a 1998 Oakton High graduate, in a friendly fire incident should be terminated and stripped of a combat badge, the Washington Post reports.

"This is a vindication of our efforts to discover what happened and what did not happen," Sharrett's father, David Sharrett Sr., told the Washington Post. "This whole thing was about Dave, about giving him a voice. He acted honorably on the battlefield. He did everything he was supposed to do. And the ones who knew about this covered it up, acted cowardly."

In 2008, Sharrett died in a friendly fire incident in Iraq, which the U.S. Army disclosed to the family at the time of his death. But they later found out the officer who fired the shots, then-1st Lt. Timothy Hanson, did not inform anyone of the incident and Sharrett was left for dead.

Though Sharrett's family was previously informed Hanson had been discharged, they found out he was  in the Army's active guard reserve.

Sharrett was a 1998 Oakton High School graduate, who played defensive end for the football team. The football program now issues a scholarship each year to a football player in Sharrett's honor. They also make an annual trip to Arlington National Cemetery for a
