Water Main Break Snarls Traffic

Intersection at Chain Bridge and Hunter Mill roads backed up

Update: Fairfax Water has closed a portion of Chain Bridge Road to work on a water main break. 

Traffic traveling south on Hunter Mill Road cannot turn left onto Chain Bridge Road because of the water main break. Traffic is also blocked from turning right onto Hunter Mill Road from Chain Bridge Road. 

Drivers are cutting through Oakton Shopping Center to head east on Chain Bridge or north on Hunter Mill Road.

A water main break early Saturday has snarled traffic in Oakton all morning, officials said.

Fairfax County Emergency Dispatch received a call at 4:33 a.m. Saturday the break. Fairfax County Police called in Fairfax Water, who runs that water main, to work on the repairs, at about 5 a.m. Fairfax County Emergency Dispatch received another call from Fairfax Water at 8:33 a.m. for further assistance.

A spokesperson with Fairfax Water said repairs should be complete within the next few hours.

At one point this morning, drivers could not turn left from Hunter Mill Road onto Chain Bridge Road and had to cut through the Oakton Shopping Center as a detour. A spokesperson with Fairfax Water said he is unaware that any detour routes are being used at this time.
