Telephone Pole Catches Fire at Oakton High

Fire put out within half hour of call to dispatch

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to a call that a transformer blew at Oakton High School on Sunday night.

The call came in at 8:21 p.m., and the fire was put out within the hour, a spokesperson with fire dispatch said. Dispatch could not confirm whether a transformer blew.

Firefighters arrived to find the telephone pole, located behind the high school, in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, school security was notified along with the electric company.

Claire Mahoney, who observed the fire being extinguished, said she heard a boom about a half hour before noticing the fire at the school.
