Update: Lochinver Lane Home Catches Fire

Male resident displaced; cause of blaze unknown

Update 11:10 a.m.: The occupant of the Miller Heights home that caught fire this morning will be displaced, officials said as they continued to investigate the cause of the blaze.

A male resident was the lone occupant of the home at the time of the fire, Battalion Chief Philip Pommerening said, and was already out of the structure when units arrived. With damage stretching to the first floor, smoke damage throughout the home and broken windows to aid the firefighters' work, he will be displaced.

Pommerening said units received a call at 9:16 a.m. about the home at 11113 Lochinver Lane. Fire and rescue officers were on scene at 9:22 a.m. and the fire in the basement was extinguished about 10 minutes later.

Upon the crew's arrival, they found smoke coming from all four sides of the home, Pommerening said. Using a thermal imager, they found the fire burning in the basement.

"There were a lot of possessions in the house, a very heavy fire load," Pommerening said. "A 'Collyers Mansion,' is the term we use.'"

A Collyer's Mansion is the term firefighters use to describe a home so filled with possessions, it is difficult to maneuver through the home.

Officials said they're still calculating the extent of damage to the home.

Oakton and Fairfax City units responded to the scene.
