Fair Oaks District Officer of the Month: Nicole Porter

Domestic violence detective earns honor for November

The Fair Oaks Citizen Advisory Committee recognized Detective Nicole Porter as Officer of the Month for November on Tuesday.

Porter serves the Fair Oaks Station as the domestic violence coordinator, which requires any case involving domestic violence or disputes to run across her desk. In the last year, she has been involved in more than 225 domestic violence cases.

"It's not for one case that I submitted her nomination, it's for her overall work," said Detective Dave Smith, Porter's supervisor. "She's always on top of her work, just very well organized, which makes my job a whole lot easier."

Smith touted her follow-through on cases, saying she involves herself in the case from beginning to end, even working closely with the station's victims services representative to make sure the victims feel comfortable and safe.

Porter is also called on to help out when the other detectives are overloaded with cases.

"She accepts those cases willingly and works them completely," Smith said. "She's just a go-to detective. She makes my section run a lot smoother, and I appreciate that."

Fairfax County Police Chief Col. David Rohrer, who attended the Dec. 6 Fair Oaks CAC meeting, said he was happy to see a domestic violence detective honored.

"I really appreciate Dave and [Capt.] Ron [Lantz] and [Lt.] Dan [Townsend]  recognizing a domestic violence detective for her work," Rohrer said. "It really is one of my top priorities when I became chief was to create domestic violence detective positions, and it's a program I refuse to cut now with all these budget issues. I intend to continue it."
