August's Top Stories: Police News Dominates Top 10

9. : Paul Kulgavin, 33, of Fox Vale Glen Court in Oakton, is accused of not repaying money acquired from his company after requesting advanced funding for two seminars that never ran.

8. : Sean Duffy, a science teacher at Waples Mill Elementary, won our Readers' Choice Poll asking readers to tell us about the best teacher in Oakton.

7. : Susan Gassman saw a coyote while walking her dogs through Berryland Farms on Aug. 8. A reader commented she also saw a coyote, but at the intersection of Waples Mill and Oakton roads about 10 days before the story posted.

6. : Mary C. Tulipane, 60, of Oakton, died Aug. 14 after succumbing to injuries sustained in a July 21 crash in Ashburn.  

5. : Fairfax County Police arrested Anthony G. Halteh, 22, of Oakton for manufacturing marijuana with the intent to distribute after responding to a burglary call from his upstairs neighbors, police said.

4. : Teens formed a group, 1VoiceInside, to start an online movement aimed at encouraging individuality in a youth culture that often touts conformity. Daniel Giguere, a Flint Hill School graduate, and his friends came up with the idea after the success of a personal YouTube video Giguere released after nearly attempting suicide earlier this year.

3. : Fairfax County Police charged Hyeong Suh, 23, with reckless driving after he disregarded a stop sign,  at the intersection of Chain Bridge Road and Blake Lane, police said.

2. : Breaking news of the Aug. 27 four-vehicle crash on Chain Bridge Road garnered the second-most clicks on Oakton Patch in August. Fairfax County Police said four vehicles were involved in an Aug. 27 crash that sent two people to the hospital. See the No. 3 story for more details on the crash.

1. : A 16-year-old driver on his way to football practice veered off Miller Road into a house on the street's 10400 block around 6 a.m. Aug. 6. Police believe a medical emergency is the cause of the accident, and the driver was transported to a local hospital wit non-life-threatening injuries.

Every month a few stories slip through the cracks, not garnering nearly as many hits — or at least not enough to make the top stories list — as your humble journalist at the helm of Oakton Patch hopes. So here are a few stories worthy of highlighting once again: 

**: Jack Sample decided to work for extra money this summer to purchase lacrosse gear for Winners Lacrosse, a nonprofit that uses lacrosse as a vehicle to teach life skills to kids in underserved neighborhoods.

**: Gabrielle Tate secured a full scholarship to Vanderbilt University, as she pursues an electrical engineering degree.

**: Lexie Krall, who often heard she could not secure a spot on a Division I roster because of her size, will be playing women's soccer for University of North Carolina — Wilmington this fall.
